Kind Words

  • "I have been doing Pilates for many years now and Lorissa's personalized approach has really helped all areas of my life."

Because she is a lifelong learner, she is always adding new things to her portfolio which translates to me as a client. I love that she knows me and my body so well that even over a Zoom call, she can give me the workout that I need. I always come away from a session feeling longer, moving better and mentally fresher!

  • "Working with Lorissa has allowed me to stay healthy, active and participate fully in life."

This includes daily walks, tennis, strenuous hikes, and returning to golf after 20 years. I feel confident in trying new activities and have found that I am more resilient and heal faster when I do over exert myself....like trying to wake surf in my 6th decade :-).

  • "I have been working with Lorissa Gilmore for several years. "

What a delight to be able to connect with someone who is as passionate about Pilates as I am!

Lorissa is knowledgeable and patient. She always listens and ensures that I am practicing correctly and safely. One of her many gifts is that she succeeds in both challenging and inspiring me, ensuring that I work as hard and as mindfully as my body will allow. As a result, my flexibility and strength are at an all-time high. She is a special lady and a gifted teacher!

  • "I have been active most of my life and, as I age, I want to continue to move and maintain my strength and mobility!" Item

I came to know Lorissa through a good friend and working with her has been the best experience.

Lorissa is very aware of individual restrictions such as bad backs, hips and knees and tailors all her workouts to fit any limitations and to challenge the body. I hope to work with Lorissa for many years to come and am very thankful that our paths crossed when they did.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • “Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness”

    — Joseph Pilates, “Return to Life”

Pilates is a movement system that was developed almost a century ago by Joseph Pilates. Originally called "Contrology", Pilates aims to develop the mind, body and spirit in a balanced way.

Matwork uses your own body weight as resistance, while specialized equipment such as the Reformer and Trapeze Table use springs, rather than weights, as resistance. Spring tension allows for tension throughout a joint’s full range of motion - as the spring opens, tension gradually increases.

Built on the principles of Breathing, Concentration, Control, Centering, Precision and Rhythm/Flow, benefits of a regular Pilates practice include:

    • Increased body awareness

    • Improved posture/alignment

    • Injury prevention

    • increased strength and flexibility

  • About the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®, GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® methods

“The ultimate aim is to be at home in one’s body, to be at one with the nature of oneself, and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience”

    — Juliu Horvath

The GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® methods are complementary exercise methods that fall under one umbrella- the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®.

Juliu Horvath, a former professional dancer, developed a program named “Yoga for Dancers” in the 1980’s after spending time in St. Thomas. The program later laid the foundations for the Gyrokinesis and Gyrotonic Methods. Influenced by the principles of dance, yoga, tai chi and swimming, Gyrotonic movements are three-dimensional and train the body as a whole.

Gyrotonic exercises are done on custom-designed Gyrotonic equipment, whereas Gyrokinesis exercises are done on a mat and chair. Spiraling and circular movements with corresponding breath patterns help increase circulation and joint mobility while opening and strengthening the body.

Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis sessions are suitable for all ages and abilities, and its many benefits include:

    • Enhanced joint mobility and articulation

    • Increased strength and flexibility

    • Strengthening of nervous and lymphatic systems
